Sinfonia for Hope - Cello for Africa

November 24, 2019

The second appearance of Sinfonia for Hope will be on November 24, 2019, on the Pipitea Marae in Wellington. Amongst a programme of music representing music and musicians from Africa and New Zealand, Sinfonia for Hope will perform Hans Huyssen’s “Concerto for an African cellist” featuring South African cellist, Heleen du Plessis, currently resident in Dunedin.

The concert will also feature a newly commissioned work by Dunedin composer Anthony Ritchie, for multiple cellos and percussion with elements linking New Zealand and Africa.

The concert will raise money to support the Tamariki Learning Centre, a primary school established in the heart of the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.

The founder of the school is Denise Carnihan, a resident of Raumati, near Wellington. The school has no ongoing funding in Africa and a sponsorship programme of a few hundred dollars a year from a few donors in the Wellington area enables the teachers to be given a small honorarium. The head teacher receives no income. The school is very, very basic with no electricity or water supply. The funds generated by this concert will make a profound impact on the lives of these children. We've also started a parallel project  to connect Kelburn Normal School in Wellington as a buddy school with Tamariki. This will enable the children from both schools to learn about each other and to share their cultural heritages. Under the oversight of Charles Bisley from KNS, aspects of Tamariki’s culture will be displayed at the concert on November 24.
